Russia's Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev called the refusal to discuss a peace agreement with Japan "historically justified, outdated and fair" in the context of the fate of the Kuril Islands, APA's Moscow correspondent reports citing his Telegram channel.

He also noted that Russia could never reach a consensus with Japan on the island.

"Russia has refused to discuss a peace agreement with Japan, which is historically justified, the outdated and fair decision in the context of the fate of the Kuril Islands. It is clear that we could never reach a consensus with the Japanese on the island issue.  Both we and they understood this before. So, the talks on the Kuril Islands have always been ritual. The new version of the Russian Constitution directly states that the territories of our country cannot be alienated. The issue is closed for discussion," Medvedev wrote.

Medvedev also said that the talks had lost their meaning because Japan imposed sanctions on Russia following the US thus demonstrating with whom it would agree on the text of the document.

"The Japanese themselves have imposed sanctions on us, showing that they are 'proud independent samurai' after the United States, which finally demonstrated that with whom they will agree on the hypothetical text of the peace agreement. Now, these talks have lost all meaning."
