"Various international climate conferences are held around the world," said Nigar Arpadarai, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29, during a roundtable titled “Dialogue with Young Journalists on Climate Issues” organized at the initiative of SOCAR within the framework of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), APA reports.
She noted that organizing regional climate conferences within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has now become part of the official program:
“The main purpose of these conferences is to discuss how global decisions adopted at COPs will be implemented in the regions and to identify their execution mechanisms. This is because COP is primarily a platform for global negotiations and decision-making. Building on the experience of the London conference, we held our first and second climate conferences. In this process, the support of the private sector, particularly from one of our country's leading companies, was very important to us. Thanks to this support, we had the opportunity to discuss climate issues in a broader framework without limiting them solely to the energy sector. Great interest was shown in the conferences both domestically and internationally. The second year was also successful in terms of attracting numerous participants, bringing diverse topics up for discussion, and ensuring the active involvement of state institutions. During COP, we had 14 initiatives. Naturally, it is necessary to ensure the sustainability of those initiatives, keep them on the agenda, and develop them further. For this reason, we continue our activities along those directions.
I believe that as a successful result of two years, in the third year, the UN itself included this initiative into its program. Thus, the climate conference held in Baku has been accepted as an official regional climate conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, namely the UNFCCC.
This is a significant outcome for both our country and the region, further strengthening Azerbaijan’s active role in the climate agenda.”
