US General Assembly’s 62nd session adopts Azerbaijan-proposed resolution

Baku–APA. The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted at its 62nd session on September 11 the resolution on increase of transparency in the industrial fields drafted by Azerbaijan. The resolution’s main goal is the recognition of Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) by the UN General Assembly, APA reports quoting AzerTAC news agency. 27 countries joined the resolution as a co-author. Azerbaijani Ambassador to UN Agshin Mehdiyev submitted the document on behalf of all co-authors. He informed about the project’s aim and emphasized the role of government, private sector and civil society in providing transparency in the industrial fields, particularly in the extractive industries. He called on UN system, as well as the countries’ missions to UN, to support efforts of the governments toward increase of transparency. The US Ambassador expressed gratitude to Azerbaijani Government for joining EITI and its implementation, as well as for drafting resolution.

The preliminary draft resolution was submitted to UN General Assembly in February, 2008 and final text was agreed as a result of bilateral and multilateral talks held by the Azerbaijani delegation.
