Azerbaijan has protested against Germany over the German publication Der Spiegel mentioning Azerbaijan in connection with an investigation into former head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) August Hanning, APA reports, citing diplomatic sources.

According to the information, Azerbaijan, through its special services and diplomatic channels, conveyed its protest on the matter both to the Office of the German Chancellor and to the German Foreign Ministry.

It should be noted that the German publication Der Spiegel, citing sources, mentioned Azerbaijan in an investigation into former head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) August Hanning. The publication alleged that while heading Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, August Hanning spied in favor of Azerbaijan, prepared certain classified reports and handed them over to the Azerbaijani side.

It should also be added that the Media and Broadcasting Council issued a statement on the matter.

The statement noted that the presentation to a broad audience as fact of unfounded allegations linking Azerbaijan’s name to the investigation in question, initially published by Germany’s Der Spiegel and later circulated by Reuters, AFP, France 24, The Times, The Telegraph and other international media outlets, causes serious concern, and that the circulation of such materials without reference to an official source is considered unacceptable information manipulation.
