The Armenian government has legal grounds to terminate the agreement with Russia on the concession-based management of the country's railways, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in an interview with Infocom, APA reports.
According to him, the government has both the necessary means and legal grounds to terminate the concession agreement.
Pashinyan noted that if a political decision is made in this regard, the agreement can be terminated.
“We have legal grounds to terminate the concession agreement. The issue is a political decision,” Pashinyan said.
However, the Prime Minister said that the Armenian government does not want to take this path and stressed that they prefer to resolve the issue in a friendly manner.
“We do not want to take this path. We want to move forward in a friendly way. We have asked our Russian partners to sell the concession rights to a third country acceptable to both Russia and Armenia,” he noted.
It should be noted that Armenia's railway system has been managed since 2008 by South Caucasus Railway, a subsidiary of Russian Railways. The concession agreement was concluded for a period of 30 years and provides for the possibility of extending it for another 10 years.
