The identities of 121 Argentine servicemen have been established in the Malvinas Islands, Head of the Central Tracing Agency (CTA) of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Cristian Rivier said at the Fourth International Conference held within the framework of the Baku Dialogue on Missing Persons, APA reports.

He said results regarding missing persons can be achieved even decades after the events.

Cristian Rivier specifically highlighted the example of Argentina. According to him, the international community and the ICRC cooperated in the process related to the Malvinas Islands.

“In the case of the Malvinas Islands, the ICRC cooperated with the international community, acted as a neutral intermediary and carried out forensic operations, identifying 121 Argentine servicemen who had died,” the ICRC official said.

He stressed that this example shows that long-term efforts to determine the fate of missing persons can produce results.

Cristian Rivier noted that states and parties to conflicts fulfilling their obligations regarding missing persons can make an important contribution to building trust.

The ICRC official also said families of missing persons have the right to receive information about the fate of their relatives and that work in this area requires the mobilization of medical, legal and forensic capabilities alongside political will.
