Azerbaijan securing seats on two key councils of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) is an important achievement, UPU International Bureau Director General Masahiko Metoki told journalists in Baku, APA-Economics reports.
He noted that Azerbaijan is represented on both the UPU Council of Administration and the Postal Operations Council.
“It is not easy to win these elections, but Azerbaijan secured seats on both councils. Among the UPU's 192 member countries, around 30 countries are represented on both councils,” Metoki said.
Touching upon the transformation taking place in the postal sector amid e-commerce, digitalization and changing customer expectations, the UPU chief said that although the volume of traditional letter mail is declining, new revenue opportunities are emerging for the sector.
According to him, the growth in parcel shipments and the use of data, in particular, are opening up new opportunities for postal operators.
Metoki believes that postal operators should increase the potential of the existing physical postal network by making more active use of digital capabilities and data.
