Azerbaijan’s relations with Central Asia have, in recent years, gone beyond the classic format of bilateral cooperation and gained deeper, institutional, and strategic substance. This dynamic is not limited to political dialogue alone – it has become one of the key directions in shaping the region’s new geopolitical architecture. Built on historical, cultural, and moral affinity, Azerbaijan–Central Asia relations are today turning into a fundamental element of a broader political construct. As a logical continuation of this trend, President Ilham Aliyev has been invited several times to the Consultative Meetings of the Heads of State of Central Asia. Today, he participated in this prestigious event held in the Uzbek capital.

Azerbaijan–Central Asia strategic partnership rises to a new level

Speaking at the 7th Consultative Meeting in Tashkent, President Ilham Aliyev stated that although Azerbaijan is geographically located in the South Caucasus, intensive cooperation has transformed it into a unified geopolitical and geoeconomic space together with Central Asia on a global scale: “The relations between Azerbaijan and Central Asian states are quite unique. We are bound together by centuries-old history, spiritual and cultural heritage, brotherhood, friendship, and solidarity. We have not only maintained these ties but also infused them with new momentum, which has the nature of a strategic partnership. Reciprocal high-level visits have become regular in recent years. Over the past three years, I have visited Central Asian countries 14 times. During the same period, my colleagues have visited our country 23 times. Azerbaijan has signed treaties and declarations on alliance and strategic partnership, as well as those on the establishment of joint investment funds, with Central Asian countries. Culture days, exhibitions and concerts are regular in nature, bringing our peoples even closer together and demonstrating how close we are and how much we value our friendship.

Azerbaijan–Central Asia brotherhood reflected in the restoration of liberated territories

Following the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, the solidarity demonstrated by Central Asian countries in the reconstruction of liberated regions stands out as a real manifestation of fraternal relations. This solidarity stems from the shared historical heritage, linguistic affinity, and deep cultural roots that unite Azerbaijan with the Central Asian states.

Recalling the fraternal gesture of Central Asian states in supporting the restoration of liberated territories, President Ilham Aliyev said: “After restoring its territorial integrity and sovereignty, our country launched large-scale efforts to revive the liberated areas. We highly appreciate the brotherly support shown by Central Asian countries in this matter. Notably, the Mirzo Ulughbek School and Kurmangazy Children's Art Centre in Fuzuli, as well as the Manas School in Aghdam, are already functioning. These are gifts from our Uzbek, Kazakh and Kyrgyz brothers. In October this year, the foundation of a mosque symbolising Turkmenistan’s brotherly support was laid in Fuzuli. All these gestures will forever remain in the memory of the grateful Azerbaijani people as proof of our brotherhood and solidarity. Today, Azerbaijan and Central Asia serve as a connecting bridge between East and West, North and South.

Azerbaijan becomes a full-fledged participant of the Central Asia format

Azerbaijan granted full member status of Central Asia Consultative Meetings-UPDATED

The decision of Central Asian states to include Azerbaijan as a full-fledged member of their cooperation and consultative formats marks a new stage. This is not merely a political gesture but a step emerging from the region’s real needs, forming a sustainable geopolitical mechanism. From now on, Azerbaijan will permanently participate in the consultative meetings of Central Asian heads of state and will be an official party to platforms held at the level of prime ministers.

Expressing his gratitude for the decision on Azerbaijan’s accession to the cooperation format, President Ilham Aliyev said the move once again confirms that relations with regional states are evolving not only within a partnership framework but in the spirit of friendship and brotherhood.

I would like to thank my esteemed colleagues for the decision on Azerbaijan’s accession to the cooperation format of the Central Asian states. This decision once again confirms the friendly and fraternal nature of our relations and will serve to strengthen cooperation and interaction across a vast geographical area,” President Ilham Aliyev emphasized.

Despite certain differences in geopolitical identity between Azerbaijan and Central Asia, the strategic spaces they occupy significantly enhance their cooperation potential. Azerbaijan is a leading country of the South Caucasus and also an integral part of the Caspian region, sharing the same historical and cultural environment with Central Asia. At the same time, the country’s proximity to the Middle East and its ties with the Black Sea region give Azerbaijan a multidimensional geopolitical profile. This allows Baku to pursue a flexible and broad-perspective foreign policy, fully aligned with the new course defined by President Ilham Aliyev.

This geopolitical reality brings Azerbaijan even closer to joining the Central Asia cooperation format and provides a strategic foundation for the process. The platform helps deepen existing partnership and alliance relations between Central Asian states and Azerbaijan. It also creates additional opportunities to expand economic and trade ties, strengthen humanitarian and cultural interactions, and enhance integration in transport and logistics. In particular, the development of the Middle Corridor enables both sides to play a more active role in global trade flows.

A new geopolitical centre

Azerbaijan–Central Asia relations today go beyond strategic partnership. They represent a comprehensive process moving towards the formation of a unified geopolitical space. This new integration model is poised to become one of the key pillars of regional architecture in the coming decades. Azerbaijan’s role in these processes strengthens interregional connectivity, expands Central Asia’s access to Europe, and creates new elements of stability across the Eurasian space.

President Ilham Aliyev has also emphasized that Azerbaijan, through close cooperation with Central Asia, is becoming a unified political and economic space of growing global importance: “Although Azerbaijan is located in the South Caucasus, thanks to this active interaction, Central Asia and Azerbaijan today form a single geopolitical and geo-economic region, whose importance in the world is steadily growing. We successfully cooperate within the framework of various international organizations, support each other's initiatives, and develop common approaches to resolving global and regional issues.

Today, Azerbaijan is no longer an external partner standing outside Central Asia, but a leading actor shaping the region’s development trajectory. This reality further strengthens Baku’s geopolitical standing and makes a significant contribution to the emergence of a new balance of power across Eurasia.
