Number of people missing from First and Second Karabakh Wars announced

As of August 31, 2026, 4,010 Azerbaijani citizens are registered as missing persons in connection with the First and Second Karabakh Wars, the State Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons said, APA reports.

According to the information, 4,004 of them went missing during the First Karabakh War, while 6 went missing during the Second Karabakh War.

Of those who went missing during the First Karabakh War, 3,222 are military personnel and 782 are civilians. The civilians include 71 children, 288 women, and 319 elderly persons.

The State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons continues its systematic activities to search for missing persons, locate and exhume their remains, identify them, and hand them over to their families.

In August 2026:

- The remains of 5 people were discovered and exhumed, bringing the total to 910.

- The remains of 21 identified persons were handed over to their families and buried, bringing the total to 267.

- The total number of missing persons identified through DNA and forensic methods remains at 328.

- A total of 32 mass burial sites have been discovered to date.

In January-August 2026, the remains of a total of 79 people were discovered and exhumed, 57 missing persons were identified, and the remains of 64 people were handed over to their families and buried.

Currently, 3,682 people are still considered missing.
