Two new solar power plants in Nakhchivan to generate 118 million kWh of electricity - PHOTO

The 25 MW “Shams 1” project is being implemented on a 52-hectare site designated as a renewable energy area, APA reports.

“CEI Nakhchivan” LLC has already completed the installation of solar panels with a capacity of 10 MW.

Construction and installation work is planned to be completed in November this year. The plant will be commissioned after the construction of the grid infrastructure is completed. Currently, 218 workers are involved in the implementation of the project.

After the plant is commissioned, it is planned to generate approximately 57 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually and provide energy to nearly 19,000 households. This will prevent approximately 26,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year and save 12 million cubic metres of natural gas.

Topographic work related to the construction of the “Western Horizon” Solar Power Plant by “Enerso” LLC has already been completed, while geological survey work is ongoing. Construction work is expected to begin by the end of this year. The project is planned to be implemented on a 50-hectare site designated as a renewable energy area. After the plant is commissioned, approximately 61 million kilowatt-hours of electricity will be generated annually, which will make it possible to provide energy to nearly 21,000 households. At the same time, it is projected that approximately 26,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions will be prevented annually and 12 million cubic metres of natural gas will be saved.

In total, 688 hectares of land in Nakhchivan have been designated as renewable energy areas for the construction of solar power plants.

The installed capacity of renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan is 2,070 MW. Of this, 108 MW, or 5.2%, accounts for Nakhchivan. With the commissioning of the “Shams 1” and “Western Horizon” plants, this figure will reach 158 MW.

It should be noted that on August 11, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva familiarized themselves with the work carried out at the “Shams 1” and “Western Horizon” Solar Power Plants, with a total capacity of 50 MW, being constructed in Nakhchivan city.
