The identities of 334 missing persons have been established in Georgia, Georgian State Minister for Reintegration and Civic Equality and head of the Interagency Commission on the Search for Missing Persons and Transfer of Remains Tea Akhvlediani said at the 4th International Conference held within the Baku Dialogue on Missing Persons, APA reports.
She said Georgia's efforts aimed at addressing humanitarian issues related to missing persons began in the early 1990s.
According to Tea Akhvlediani, as a result of efforts initiated by families and supported by the government, the remains of 200 missing persons were returned to their families during that period.
The state minister noted that these efforts were subsequently continued under the State Program on Missing Persons. The program was established to address the consequences of the armed conflicts of the 1990s and the August 2008 war:
“Within the framework of the program, a further 334 missing persons were identified and returned to their families. This was made possible thanks to the constructive participation of all sides within coordination mechanisms, strict adherence to humanitarian principles, and the important role of the International Committee of the Red Cross as a neutral intermediary.”
She also touched upon Azerbaijan-Georgia relations, saying that the two countries have historically enjoyed good-neighborly relations based on mutual respect and friendship:
“Today, these relations have been further strengthened by a strategic partnership. We highly appreciate the dynamic and multifaceted cooperation between our countries on all issues and in all areas of mutual interest. We remain firmly committed to continuing cooperation in this important humanitarian area as well.”
