Europe could lose nearly 10 GW of electricity due to solar eclipse

The solar eclipse that will occur on August 12 will cause a temporary decline in solar power generation across much of Europe, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) said, APA-Economics reports.

As the Moon passes in front of the Sun, a significant decrease in photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation is expected during the solar eclipse.

According to ENTSO-E, under clear weather conditions, PV electricity generation in Europe could decrease by up to 9.7 GW. This will create a rapid but predictable change in electricity generation.

It is reported that the change will be observed from 19:15 to 21:30 Central European Summer Time, or from 21:15 to 23:30 Baku time.

ENTSO-E notes that transmission system operators have implemented preventive measures to ensure the safe and stable operation of Europe's electricity system.

Thus, operators working at electricity system control centers have been informed in advance, while market participants have been notified of the expected decline in solar power generation. The greatest impact of the decline in solar power generation is expected to be in Spain and Germany.

It should be noted that the solar eclipse that will occur on August 12, 2026, will not be visible in Azerbaijan.

According to the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory named after Nasreddin Tusi, the eclipse will begin at 19:34 Baku time and end at 23:57. The maximum phase of the eclipse will occur at 21:46.
