Today is the birthday of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ilham Aliyev, APA reports.
The head of state turns 62.
Ilham Heydar oghlu Aliyev was born on December 24, 1961, in Baku. Ilham Aliyev, who received his secondary education in Baku in 1967-1977, entered the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1977, completed his higher education, and continued his scientific activities at the institute's postgraduate course.
He finalized his research works and received a Ph.D. degree in history in 1985 and worked at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations until 1990. From 1994-2003, he worked as the vice president of the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), and then as the first vice president.
Elected as a member of the Milli Majlis in 1995 and 2000, Ilham Aliyev was the head of the Azerbaijani delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) from 2001-2003. Within the framework of his political activity in PACE, he was elected the deputy chairman of the agency and Bureau member in January 2003.
In 2003, due to his appointment as Prime Minister, Ilham Aliyev's powers as a deputy were terminated.
On October 15, 2003, he was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and assumed his post on 31 October 2003. In the elections held on October 15, 2008, Ilham Aliyev, who acquired the votes of more than 88 percent of the voters, was re-elected as the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
He won again in the presidential elections held on October 9, 2013.
In the presidential elections held on April 11, 2018, Ilham Aliyev was re-elected as the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan after receiving 86.03 percent of the votes. President Ilham Aliyev is the chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party. Ilham Aliyev is also the president of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan since 1997. He was awarded the highest order of the International Olympic Committee for his great services in the development of sports and the Olympic movement. He knows Azerbaijani, Russian, English, French, and Turkish fluently.
He is married with three children.
As a result of the local anti-terrorist measures conducted on September 19-20, 2023, the Azerbaijani Army, under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, cleared all the territories of Azerbaijan from Armenian invaders, restored country's territorial integrity and fully ensured its sovereignty. After 30 years, our tricolor flag is flying in our lands, which were liberated from occupation.
