As we have already reported, a delegation of Azerbaijan led by Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova is on a working visit to the city of Arusha in the United Republic of Tanzania to take part in the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). During the visit, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis took part in the co-ordinating meeting of the Parliamentary Union of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (PUOIC), the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis told APA.
Speaker Sahiba Gafarova remarked, as she addressed the meeting, that it is being held under the chairmanship of the Parliament of Azerbaijan and that the 20th session of the PUOIC Conference had held in June this year in Baku been successfully and that our Parliament took over the chairmanship of the Organisation there. This chairmanship reflects Azerbaijan's commitment to strengthening solidarity and close ties in the Islamic world.
The Speaker of the Milli Majlis as President of the 20th Conference of the PUOIC, highly praised the work done jointly and remarked that the Organisation united the parliaments with diverse national experiences and perspectives but that they are all dedicated to dialogue, solidarity and parliamentary co-operation.
It was mentioned that Azerbaijan had assumed the chairmanship of the PUOIC, taking as its core peace, justice, solidarity, tolerance and human dignity as well as sustainable and inclusive development.
According to Speaker Sahiba Gafarova, it is evident from experience that countries from various regions and with distinct positions can work together whilst being mindful of consultations, mutual respect and common interests.
The Speaker of the Milli Majlis stated that regional perspectives ought to take a more salient stance in international parliamentary dialogue.
The Speaker of the Milli Majlis mentioned her meeting with the Permanent Representatives of the OIC Member States to the UN during her last visit to New York last month and emphasised that that meeting had been a discussion of how the priorities and perspectives of our countries could be best reflected in international decision-making.
Having stressed the Islamic World’s possession of a tremendous human, cultural and economic potential, the Speaker said that many of our societies countenance conflicts, forcible displacement, poverty, climatic pressures, terrorism, extremism and Islamophobia.
In her opinion, those challenges require a more powerful practical co-operation. The prospects of our Parliaments should not only be represented in international institutions but also contribute materially to forming priorities and decisions.
It should be said that the other Speakers and delegates of Parliaments of the Organisation’s Member States who spoke at the event lauded the operation of the Organisation under the chairmanship of the Milli Majlis.
