Baku Olympic Stadium may host IAAF World Championships â€“ NOC vice-president

Huseynzade said that newly-built Baku Olympic Stadium may host large-scale competitions on athletics.

“We are currently negotiating with the European Athletics Association. Representatives of the organization reviewed our beautiful stadium and offered organization of competitions for teenagers, youth and adults. European championship is among them. We can talk about it more concretely when next year's calendar is drawn up.”

Huseynzade mentioned that the sporting venue, where the opening ceremony and athletics competitions of the first European Games were held, may host the IAAF World Championship.

“I mean Diamond League and even the summer world championship. The International Association of Athletics Federations will elect its president in August in China. Upon appointment of a new president for the Association, we will hold negotiations on holding of the biggest athletics competitions in Baku,” he said.

On June 28, the stadium will host the closing ceremony of the European Games as well, Huseynzade said, noting that the modern sports venue has the capacity to host similar events during the Olympic Games.

“The stadium is ready to host the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games. According to the requirements of the International Olympic Committee, during such events, the venue should hold a capacity of 80,000 spectators. Baku Olympic Stadium has a capacity of 68,000 spectators. However, the possibility of increasing this figure at the expense of additional stands was taken into account during designing of the arena”, he added.
