Azerbaijan hands over European Games flag to European Olympic Committees

Baku – APA. President of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) Patrick Hickey on Sunday took over the flag of the first-ever European Games from Azad Rahimov, Azerbaijan’s minister of youth and sports and the executive director of Baku-2015, at the event held on the last day of the European Games.

Patrick Hickley said Baku has been the benefactor of the European Games for more than 30 months, the Baku-2015 Operating Committee told APA.

“The EOC today is taking over the Games with stronger potential which proved greater than we could ever imagine. One of the hugest contributions Baku-2015 made is that it laid the foundation of the future of all European Games ahead. After the initial stage of this glorious success, the future of these games is secured,” said Hickey.

Azad Rahimov said in his speech that he is presenting to Patrick Hickey the flag of the European Games in a special box. “Inside the box is the memorial badge of the city to host next European Games as well as other badges which will be of symbolic meaning for the next 100 hundreds years of the European Games”.

The ceremony was attended by the EOC Executive Committee, members of the EOC Baku-2015 Coordination Commission, directors of the Baku-2015 Operating Committee as well as representatives of 12,500 torch-protecting volunteers who played a big part in the successful holding of the Games.
