Baku-2020 delegation leaves for Quebec to participate in election of official candidate cities

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Youth and Sports Samaya Mammadova told APA that at this meeting the International Olympic Committee will announce the official candidate cities for 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Azerbaijani delegation includes Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of Baku-2020 Organizing Committee Yagub Eyyubov, Minister of Youth and Tourism Azad Rahimov, Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzadeh and Executive Director of Baku-2020 Organizing Committee Konul Nurullayeva.

On the eve of the visit, Azad Rahimov said they hoped that Baku would be granted the official candidate status for hosting 2020 Olympic Games: â€œWe presented the bid book, which shows that we are strong and worthy candidate. This book reflects the quick, innovative and compact organizational plan of the Olympic Games. We want to show our candidacy that the Olympics Games will be a serious investment to the sport and development healthy lifestyle of the population and quality of life, as well as efficient and responsible organization of the games in the future. We offered to the international Olympics movement the organization model of games based on sport requirement. It means that according to Olympic infrastructures reflected in our bid book, all sports facilities will be used by the sportsmen of our country and region. Our model is a real and efficient example for the host countriesâ€.

Executive director of the â€œBaku-2020â€ Organizing Committee Konul Nurullayeva said that Baku has ideal climate, beautiful seaside bay and rich history for the sport: â€œDespite many countries has faced financial crisis, Azerbaijan has stable and rapidly developing economy. It is impossible not to see the positive features of Baku-2020 candidacy. The sportive heritage, which will remain in Azerbaijan after the Games, will make a great contribution to the development of sportsmen of many generations. Everybody in Azerbaijan supports our candidacy for the Olympic Games. We will convey our peopleâ€™s hopes and desires to the international sports society assembled in Quebec. We hope that the results of this work, carried out over last 7 months, will be positive and Baku will pass the next stage of the contest for hosting the 2020 Olympic Gamesâ€.
