Mass graves remain like open wounds, Director-General of the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) Kathryne Bomberger said at the Fourth International Conference held within the framework of the Baku Dialogue on Missing Persons, APA reports.
She thanked the Government of Azerbaijan for hosting an important event to discuss the issue of missing persons: “For ICMP, this discussion is of particular importance because determining the fate of missing persons means providing families and society with reliable and accurate information. But it also means restoring rights — ensuring justice, accountability, the right to know the truth and the right to compensation.
This is an investment in peace and security. When issues related to missing persons remain unresolved, their consequences do not disappear over time.
Unanswered questions can remain in the memory of families and communities for generations. Unanswered questions also undermine societies’ trust and confidence in governments. When societies have the necessary institutions and capabilities to determine the fate of missing persons, they are better prepared to deal with the consequences of conflict, disasters and crises."
