The new locomotives purchased from China will be used for freight transportation along international corridors passing through Azerbaijan, Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, Head of the Public Relations Division of the Communications Department of Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), told journalists, APA-Economics reports.
According to him, demand for freight transportation along the Middle Corridor is increasing, particularly with the growing number of block trains dispatched from China toward Azerbaijan.
"This is prompting Azerbaijan Railways to enrich, expand and renew its locomotive fleet in line with modern challenges," Bakhtiyar Hajiyev noted.
According to him, the purchase of new locomotives should be viewed not only as a renewal of ADY's locomotive fleet but also as a response to the growing demand for transit freight transportation along corridors passing through Azerbaijan: "Because modern trains, as I mentioned, make it possible to transport heavier loads, and new technology also allows these two locomotives to be coupled together and operated by a single crew, making it possible to transport twice as much freight as a single locomotive over longer distances," he said.
