We have reached an agreement with local cargo carrier Silk Way Airlines on developing an airport and surrounding logistics infrastructure in the Alat Free Economic Zone. Perhaps this will be the first airport located within a free economic zone, Valeh Alasgarov, Chairman of the Board of the Alat Free Economic Zone, said during his speech at the “German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference 2026,” APA-Economics reports.
According to him, 750 hectares of land have been allocated for the project: “Construction of the airport began in April 2024, and construction will be completed by the end of this year. The airport will be ready for operation no later than the end of March or the beginning of April 2027."
Valeh Alasgarov said that in the first stage, the airport will have an annual cargo handling capacity of 500,000 tons: “This figure is expected to be gradually increased to at least 2 million tons."
