Complex genetic examinations of samples that are difficult to identify are now being successfully conducted, Rufat Aliyev, Head of the Main Military Medical Department of the State Security Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Major General of the Medical Service, said during a panel session at the 4th International Conference held within the framework of the Baku Dialogue on Missing Persons, APA reports.
He noted that, taking into account the multidisciplinary approach in genetic research, specialists from the department have actively participated in international scientific conferences and seminars in Cyprus, Australia, Türkiye, Switzerland, Romania, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, as well as in Baku and other regions of Azerbaijan:
"Thanks to the existing infrastructure and experienced specialists, one of our main objectives is to broadly integrate the potential of the Genetic Research Center into forensic medical examination activities and the administration of justice. In this regard, complex genetic examinations of samples that are difficult to identify are already being successfully carried out in accordance with decisions of the Prosecutor General's Office and other law enforcement agencies. In line with the challenges of modern medical and biological sciences, the Genetic Research Center continues to focus on strengthening cooperation with leading universities and renowned scientific research institutions. Our main strategic objective is to combine scientific potential, respond promptly to modern challenges and properly assess future prospects. Currently, the center, together with partner scientific institutions, is successfully continuing large-scale scientific research projects in fundamental and applied fields. Within the framework of this cooperation, important research is being conducted in population genetics, epigenetics, pharmacogenetics, molecular genetics and cytogenetics. Joint scientific research in genetics and epigenetics conducted under memorandums of understanding signed between the Main Military Medical Department and renowned scientific and educational institutions can be cited as a successful example. At a time when interagency cooperation has become imperative in the identification of missing persons, the Main Military Medical Department is ready to share its experience with partners and support projects aimed at training professional specialists in genetic examination."
It was also stated that, in order to further improve activities, particular importance is attached to studying the experience of international scientific institutions that have achieved advanced results in this field, exchanging knowledge and maintaining close cooperation:
"This conference, held in partnership with the International Commission on Missing Persons and already established as a tradition, has laid the foundation for a new stage in combating the consequences of global humanitarian crises and clarifying the fate of missing persons, one of the most painful issues."
