US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that ending the Russia-Ukraine war through diplomatic negotiations does not appear possible at present.
Rubio made the remarks in an interview with the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
According to the US Secretary of State, the Russia-Ukraine war has reached a strategic stalemate, and the situation can be resolved either through negotiations or escalation.
Rubio said that one of the reasons diplomatic efforts have failed to produce results is Russia's demand for full control over Donbas, which Ukraine considers unacceptable.
"At present, there is no prospect of a negotiated settlement. We are ready to play whatever role we can to achieve that. We have tried to do so before, but so far it has not been possible to achieve this goal because the Russians are demanding full control over Donbas, and Ukraine considers this unacceptable," Rubio said.
He emphasized that the United States remains ready to assist in reaching a diplomatic settlement to the conflict.
