"Format of Russian peacekeepers in Azerbaijan's Garabagh region could change. It is possible that Russia will continue its activities in the format of an observation mission in Garabagh," said Igor Korotchenko, the Editor-in-Chief of the Russian National Defense Journal and a renowned military expert, APA's Moscow correspondent reports.
Korotchenko speaking at a round table, named “The development of South Caucasus after the end of Gabagah conflict” with the participation of Russian and Azerbaijani experts in the online format, noted that Azerbaijan's military victory created a new geopolitical reality in the region: “The new geopolitical reality arose as the result of the events that happened in the last three years in the South Caucasus - September 27, 2020, Second Garabagh War and September 19-20 the anti-terrorist measures implemented by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces. This reality is that Azerbaijan has "de facto" and "de jure" restored its territorial integrity. This reality, indeed, requires a new understanding in terms of the future development of the region. Here we are talking about how the development in the region will unfold, what the interests of the main parties will be, how the future formats on mutual relations between Russia and Azerbaijan will be.
First of all, it should be noted that all activities of Azerbaijan were in line with international law. Therefore, the attempts of these or other countries and power centers to put pressure on Azerbaijan and to question the legitimacy of the measures it has taken are completely illegal. We see that not all countries and power centers rejoice in the changes taking place in the region. We observe a rather contradictory and hypocritical position of the official Yerevan, which on the one hand recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and on the other hand, tries to attract foreign actors to the region as a force of influence. We see France as a country with a destructive position, which is not satisfied with just supporting Armenia, but is trying to break the peace process in the South Caucasus."
