A criminal case has been launched over the deaths of two people in a zipline accident at a recreation center in Azerbaijan’s northwestern Sheki district, the Prosecutor General’s Office told APA.
The incident occurred on September 8 at the Sheki Yaylasi recreation center in Bash Kungut village.
According to the preliminary investigation, Ujal Bayramov, born in 1999, and Joshgun Mammadzade, born in 1995, were using a zipline when the metal structure supporting the cable system became deformed.
As a result, the main mechanical unit detached from the cable and additional safety equipment was damaged. Both men fell from a height and died at the scene.
Prosecutors inspected the scene and the bodies, while forensic medical and technical safety examinations were ordered. Other necessary investigative procedures have also been carried out.
The Sheki District Prosecutor’s Office has opened a criminal case under Article 314.3 of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code, which concerns negligence resulting in the deaths of two or more people.
The preliminary investigation is ongoing.
Investigators are working to establish all circumstances surrounding the accident, including its causes and contributing factors, the technical condition of the zipline equipment, and whether its operation complied with applicable safety requirements.
Authorities will also assess other circumstances relevant to determining legal responsibility in connection with the incident.
Sheki, located in northwestern Azerbaijan, is one of the country’s major tourism destinations.
