The inventory of 130 monuments located in Karabakh and East Zangezur has not yet been completed, Head of the State Service for Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage Sabina Hajiyeva stated during her speech on the fourth day of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), APA reports.
She stated that the main reason for this is that these territories are still contaminated with mines.
“Azerbaijan, which has launched large-scale humanitarian demining operations, is applying a people- and culture-centered approach in the restoration process. Historical monuments are being restored, cultural institutions are reopening, ‘smart villages’ and modern cities are being built. Green energy infrastructure is being expanded, and internally displaced persons are returning to their native lands. Because returning to Karabakh and Zangezur does not only mean that people will live there again. People should feel that they are in their native homes. For this, the monuments that they consider part of their heritage should also be there,” the head of the State Service noted.
