US President Donald Trump has said Venezuela's oil reserves are sufficient to meet US demand for 500 years, foreign media reports.
Speaking at the Republican National Committee Midterm Convention, Trump said the United States and Venezuela had reached an agreement on the joint development of the country's oil fields.
"65 billion barrels are ours. Do you know what that means? Enough for a lifetime, for 500 years," Trump said.
Trump described the agreement as "potentially the largest in US history."
The United States and Venezuela had previously announced a historic agreement providing for investment in the South American country and an increase in its oil production.
Delcy Rodriguez, a representative appointed by the Venezuelan president, said the partnership would allow private operators to participate, significantly increasing oil production volumes.
The agreement covers the development of 17 strategic oil fields with proven oil potential of 65 billion barrels. The investment is expected to exceed $100 billion, while the deal is projected to generate more than $200 billion in tax revenue for Venezuela's state budget
