Inventory work has been carried out at 575 of the 749 monuments in Azerbaijan’s territories liberated from occupation, Sabina Hajiyeva, Head of the State Service for Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, said during her speech on the fourth day of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), APA reports.
She said that 196 of the inventoried monuments are located in the city of Shusha.
Sabina Hajiyeva noted that field surveys were conducted during the inventory process, digital maps of the monuments were prepared, photographs were taken, and drone footage was recorded. Archive documents and other sources were also examined.
“Monitoring has shown that our cultural heritage suffered serious damage during the occupation, with monuments subjected to destruction and vandalism.
Overall, 68 monuments in the liberated territories were completely destroyed. However, the number of monuments in Karabakh and East Zangezur is many times higher. Of the monuments, 115 suffered large-scale destruction, while others were damaged to varying degrees. Currently, the total material damage caused to 434 monuments is estimated at AZN 700.154 million,” the State Service chief said.
She added that, specifically, nine state-registered mausoleums, three cemeteries and seven mosques in the liberated territories were completely destroyed. Another 25 mosques, 14 mausoleums and two tombs were damaged to varying degrees.
