The Shah Deniz gas-condensate field, located in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, makes an important strategic contribution to the natural gas security of both Türkiye and Europe, Director General of the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) Cem Erdem said during his speech at the 5th Azerbaijan-Türkiye Energy Forum, APA-Economics reports.
He noted that the energy sector is one of the main areas of strategic cooperation between Türkiye and Azerbaijan. Stating that TPAO has participated in this cooperation for many years, Cem Erdem recalled that the company began its activities in Azerbaijan in 1994 with the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli project.
According to him, TPAO currently operates as a partner in oil production at the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli project and in natural gas and condensate production at Shah Deniz. The company also participates in the transportation of Azerbaijani oil to Türkiye and global markets via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan main export pipeline.
“Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli is one of the most important strategic projects of Türkiye-Azerbaijan energy cooperation. Shah Deniz, meanwhile, makes important contributions to the natural gas security of both Türkiye and Europe,” the TPAO Director General emphasized.
Cem Erdem said that TPAO does not intend to limit its activities in Azerbaijan to existing projects. The company wants to increase its investments and expand its cooperation with SOCAR on new projects. He noted that the partnership in the Shafag-Asiman project in 2025 was one example of this policy.
The TPAO Director General added that global and regional developments are increasing the importance of long-term and reliable partnerships.
