Azerbaijan’s CEC schedules early presidential elections to Feb 7, 2024 -UPDATED-1

A meeting of the Central Election Commission (CEC) was held on December 8, 2023, under the chairmanship of Mazahir Panahov, APA reports.

The media and communication department of the Secretariat of the Central Election Commission said that the Chairman of the Central Election Commission first introduced the members of the Commission to the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the announcement of the extraordinary presidential elections of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Then, the issue of setting the extraordinary presidential elections of the Republic of Azerbaijan was considered and in order to ensure the relevant part of the Decree, it was decided to set the elections for February 7, 2024.

The Commission approved the Calendar plan, which reflects the necessary points for the implementation of the main actions and measures provided for in the legislation for the conduct of the elections by the election subjects in a consistent and quality manner, providing them with methodical assistance and increasing the efficiency of their activities in the election process.

To investigate complaints about actions (inaction) and decisions that violate the right to vote of citizens in the said elections, as well as to ensure more effective provision of the electoral rights of citizens, the issue of creating an expert group under the Central Election Commission was also discussed at the meeting, and an expert group consisting of 9 people was formed by the decision of the Commission. The creation of expert groups consisting of 3 members under the district election commissions was entrusted to the district election commissions no later than the period considered in the legislation.

By the decision of the CEC, a working group consisting of experts from relevant state institutions was established to check the correctness of the signatures on the signature sheets submitted for the registration of the candidate in the extraordinary presidential elections of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the information in other election documents, and a member of the Commission was appointed as the head of the working group.

Current issues were also discussed at the meeting attended by representatives of international organizations and diplomatic missions of foreign countries, as well as media organizations.

A meeting of the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan (CEC) on the snap presidential elections kicked off, APA reports.

The Central Election Commission has scheduled extraordinary presidential elections on February 7, 2024.

CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov said that according to the decision, early elections will be held on February 7, 2024.

The decision was taken by voting. The decision enters into force on the day of its publication.
