Decisions made over the next decade will determine the West's position in the future world order, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during a major policy speech addressed to Europe in Athens, APA reports.
"Today, we stand at a crossroads. Because the next decade and the decisions we make will write the history of the next century," Rubio said.
According to him, the course chosen by the West will determine whether it can maintain its leading position in the international community.
Rubio said that over time, the West had begun to shy away from the characteristics that distinguished it, viewing its prosperity as a source of guilt and losing confidence in its own greatness.
"Nationalism became a negative word, we tore down our monuments and condemned our own history," the Secretary of State said.
Rubio argued that Western countries had gradually transferred an increasing share of their sovereignty to global bureaucratic structures over the years.
He also claimed that as the West's self-confidence weakened, its rivals became more assertive, expanding their wealth and power.
