By 2030, the number of people over the age of 80 in the world will exceed the number of children under the age of 1, Chitralekha Marie Massey, Chief of the Rights of Older Persons Section at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), said during a roundtable on the rights of older persons titled “Housing Across the Lifespan – Adequate Housing for All Older Persons” organized within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, APA reports.
The UN official stated that the world is rapidly aging and these changes should directly affect housing policy.
According to the expert, states and cities must adhere to three main principles: respect, protect and fulfill rights.
“One in six people over the age of 65 in the world faces violence, abuse and neglect,” Massey said.
She added that without properly planned cities, it is impossible to ensure the right to safe and dignified housing.
“A home is not just a building. It should be considered together with the community, the city and the state system,” she stressed.
