There have been cases of cleared areas being recontaminated with mines during floods, Chairman of the Board of the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA) Vugar Suleymanov told journalists during the Fourth Climate Week (CW4) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, APA reports.
He said that cases have been observed in which areas cleared of mines were recontaminated with mines during floods and mudflows.
“Considering the specifics of our activities, we cannot work on rainy days for safety reasons. The increase in rainfall recently, in recent years, has undoubtedly had a negative impact on our activities,” Vugar Suleymanov noted.
He said that cases of cleared areas being recontaminated with mines during floods and mudflows have been observed several times.
“During floods, river waters carry mines to lower-lying areas. Undoubtedly, this is an alarm bell for us. We are already paying attention to these issues and additionally inspect areas after floods and mudflows,” the ANAMA Chairman emphasised.
According to him, since November 2020, more than 300,000 hectares of land in the country have been cleared of mines and unexploded ordnance.
“As a result of these clearance operations, nearly 262,000 mines and unexploded ordnance have been detected and neutralised,” Vugar Suleymanov added.
