Climate anomalies observed in Azerbaijan and many countries around the world once again demonstrate how important it is to combat climate change and strengthen measures in this area, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Umayra Taghiyeva said at a panel discussion titled “Benefits and Challenges of Integrating Artificial Intelligence into Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems” held as part of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), APA reports.

She said that artificial intelligence can enhance the effectiveness of early warning systems: “A warning issued 24 hours in advance can reduce losses by up to 9%. This demonstrates how important early warning systems are in protecting human life and property.”

According to Umayra Taghiyeva, the world is currently entering a period of significant transformation and new opportunities with the support of artificial intelligence: “It is no coincidence that the importance of this issue is reflected across all global platforms. In this regard, the ‘Artificial Intelligence Strategy of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2025–2028,’ approved by an Order of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, is an important document defining our country’s policy in this field.”

She noted that the implementation of the strategy will accelerate the development and application of artificial intelligence in Azerbaijan, enable the formation of a more systematic approach in this field, create a favorable environment for the introduction of innovations and new technologies, and strengthen the relevant infrastructure and human capital: “This strategic approach will also create new opportunities in the fight against climate change. In particular, it will support the establishment and development of early warning systems. The integration of artificial intelligence with warning systems will enable faster assessment of climate risks and the implementation of preventive measures.”

Umayra Taghiyeva added that improving the monitoring and forecasting of extreme weather events is no longer a choice.
