On the opening encounter, Mamayev, competing in the Kumite style of Karate, took on Greek Mikhail Tzanos. The fight ended in a 0-0 draw. In the next fight, the junior world champion beat his Ukrainian opponent Yaroslav Haruna in a 6-3 win. Azerbaijan’s 23-year-old karateka then fought Kenji Grillon (France), whom he defeated with a score of 6-1 and qualified for the semi-finals.
In his way to the final, Mamayev met with Alvin Karaqi (Kosovo). This game too ended in a victory for the Azerbaijani karate fighter. In the decisive encounter, Mamayev defeated Greek Mikhail Geordios Tzanos. Although the fight resulted in a 1-1 draw, 3 of the 4 assistant referees gave preference to the Azerbaijani karateka. With this win, the Azerbaijani team has won its 10th medals.
