Baku – APA. “I had said ahead of time that if I win the gold medal at this tournament, I will mount on the honorary chair to sing our anthem. It happened: I sang the Azerbaijani anthem and I’m proud of it,” Irina Zaretska, who earned the Azerbaijani team another gold medal at the first European Games, told apasport.az.

The 19-year-old female karate fighter (68kg) shared her feelings:

“My toughest opponent was the Austrian athlete in the final. She had been the European champion this year. In previous games, I had lost to her with a score of 0-4. When I saw she was going to be my opponent again, I started prepare myself even more seriously and I defeated her. I tried not to repeat my previous mistakes so that I would not be the second. As my trainer says, if you face an opponent you have got to prove yourself. In the final, I got back all the points I had lost”.

Note that, this was the 4th gold medal of our team at the first European Games.
