Discussions surrounding the issue of reparations often lead to disagreements and polarization, Charles Kayonga, Rwanda’s Ambassador to Türkiye, said at the international conference titled “Injustices of Belgian Colonialism and 101 Years of Struggle for Reparations,” organized by the Baku Initiative Group, APA reports.

He stated that attention should be focused not only on determining responsibility for what happened in the past, but also on ways to address the consequences created by that period.

The ambassador noted that the effects of colonialism did not end with territorial occupation:

“As a result of this policy, institutions and structures emerged that influenced the exercise of political power, the formation of social identity, economic relations, as well as the inclusion or exclusion of various groups in society from processes.

Colonialism did not directly determine political outcomes, but it created the structures within which those outcomes were shaped. In order to achieve genuine decolonization and free ourselves from these effects, it is first necessary to shed light on those structures and determine their impact.”
