Senior US administration officials do not rule out that the war with Iran could continue until the end of President Donald Trump’s term in office, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing sources.

According to the newspaper, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other administration officials have raised this possibility with Trump during meetings in the Oval Office and the White House Situation Room.

US officials reportedly believe that Tehran could continue resisting Washington’s pressure despite the blockade and ongoing military operations. Under such a scenario, the conflict could continue beyond the inauguration of the next US president in January 2029.

The WSJ noted that Vance and Rubio are considered potential Republican candidates for the 2028 presidential election.

According to the newspaper, a prolonged war could place additional strain on US military resources and lead to sustained disruptions and instability in global energy markets ahead of the 2028 US presidential election.
