A group of irregular migrants rescued after a boat sank off Lebanon’s northern coast was handed over to Syrian authorities at the Al-Arida border crossing on Wednesday, Asharq Al-Awsat reported, citing a local security source.
According to the source, members of the Lebanese Navy rescued 21 Syrian nationals from the water on September 8 after the boat they were using in an attempt to reach Cyprus illegally caught fire and sank near the port of Tripoli in northern Lebanon.
The exact number of people who were on board the vessel has not yet been determined. Search and rescue operations are continuing off the Lebanese coast.
Three Syrian nationals were taken to hospital with severe burn injuries.
