Global debt, covering the liabilities of governments, households, financial and non-financial companies, increased by 29 trillion dollars in 2025, reaching a record level of 348.3 trillion dollars, APA-Economics reports, citing the Institute of International Finance (IIF).

According to the information, the increase was primarily driven by the rise in sovereign debt obligations, which accounted for more than 10 trillion dollars. Approximately three-quarters of the increase fell on the United States, China, and eurozone countries.

Currently, the growth in global debt is linked not to household or corporate borrowing, but to ongoing budget deficits in the world’s largest economies.

The IIF notes that by the end of 2025, global government debt rose to 106.7 trillion dollars from 96.3 trillion dollars the previous year. Non-financial corporate debt amounted to 100.6 trillion dollars, while household debt stood at 64.6 trillion dollars.
