A reliable database is essential for the development of SMEs in conditions of global uncertainty, said Shigeo Shimizu, Executive Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) from Japan, at the presentation of the “Asia Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Monitor 2025” report held in Baku with the support of ADB, APA-Economics reports.

He said that micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of many countries’ economies, but the lack of reliable data in this area continues.

According to Sh. Shimizu, the ASM 2025 project is aimed precisely at filling this gap and has already become a key reference source for governments in shaping SME policy. “As global economic uncertainties deepen, the importance of a more comprehensive and accurate database for evidence-based decision-making is increasing,” he emphasized.

The ASM 2025 database covers indicators up to 2024 and includes 26 developing ADB member countries, including Azerbaijan. The report analyzes areas such as SMEs’ access to finance, digitalization, “green” business initiatives, and participation opportunities in international trade.

The project is supported by the Government of Japan and aims to promote sustainable, inclusive, and evidence-based economic growth in the Asia–Pacific region.
