Relations between Ukraine and the European Union are a tragicomedy, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on June 8, APA reports citing RT.

"It's very funny. Unfortunately, and sad at the same time. This is such a tragicomedy that is happening in relations between the EU and Ukraine," the diplomat told RT.

She recalled that for many years Ukraine had been teased with promises of admission to the European Union. Zakharova drew a parallel with Türkiye, which has also been given similar promises for years. However, unlike Ukraine, Ankara followed its own national interests.

"Türkiye is developing its economy, developing democratic processes, by the way," Zakharova said.

She stressed that for decades, economic indicators in Turkey have shown the country's ability to be part of the European Union.

In Europe, a negative attitude towards the idea of Ukraine's accession to the EU has often been expressed recently. Thus, German political scientist Eike Hamer, in a conversation with REN TV on May 31, said that with the current level of the economy and corruption, the country has no chance of joining the association.
