Although Azerbaijan has sufficient reserves to increase its gas exports, existing infrastructure capacity does not fully allow for it, said SOCAR Vice President Vitaliy Baylarbayov during the session titled “Gas Markets: Infrastructure, Strategy and Geopolitics” at the Baku Energy Forum, APA-Economics reports.

According to him, demand for Azerbaijani gas has increased further amid recent geopolitical developments, and many countries and companies are requesting higher supply volumes.

“We cannot fully meet this demand. The reason is not a lack of resources. We have the resources,” Vitaliy Baylarbayov said.

According to the SOCAR official, the main limitation is related to the capacity of existing transportation infrastructure.

“What we lack is infrastructure. The existing system was built to be expandable, but no one could have predicted such rapid growth in demand,” he stressed.

Baylarbayov noted that despite restrictions on financing fossil fuel infrastructure projects, SOCAR will continue developing new production projects, infrastructure and additional export routes.

According to him, the company is also currently working on additional energy corridors that will connect Azerbaijan with new markets.
