The Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology of the Russian Federation (Rosstandart) will introduce a new state standard (GOST) for oil for the first time in 25 years, Russian media reported, citing a Rosstandart document, APA reports.

One of the key changes to be introduced concerns the revision of indicators affecting safety during the circulation, supply, and transportation of oil.

The new standard will enter into force in January 2027 and will replace the document that has been in effect since 2002. Thus, for the first time in 25 years, new requirements for oil will be applied in Russia.

First of all, the definition of oil itself has been updated in the new standard. Previously, this raw material was understood as a “toxic product in its natural liquid state,” whereas it is now defined as a “natural liquid mineral mixture of hydrocarbons with a wide physical and chemical composition.”

Unified technical requirements for oil have also been established.  These include indicators of key importance for its acceptance, quality control, transportation, and subsequent use, such as the content of water, chloride salts, mechanical impurities, and other substances.
