Central Asia, the South Caucasus and the Caspian region are becoming a new energy space, Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said at the Energy Transition Investment Forum for Central Asia, APA-Economics reports.

According to the minister, the global energy system is undergoing a rapid transformation, and energy security, climate goals, technological innovation, and growing energy demand have become the key factors shaping the global energy agenda.

Parviz Shahbazov noted that energy demand is increasing rapidly due to the development of artificial intelligence and data centers, making it necessary not only to create new power generation capacities but also to expand and modernize electricity grids.

According to him, the APREC platform, an initiative of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), serves to accelerate renewable energy-based integration between Central Asia and neighboring regions, contributing to the formation of a new energy and investment platform.

The minister stated that the most important project in this direction is the Central Asia–Azerbaijan Green Energy Corridor. He recalled that two years ago in Baku, the presidents of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan signed a strategic partnership agreement on this project.

Parviz Shahbazov emphasized that the development of cooperation in the field of renewable energy is an important component of President Ilham Aliyev’s vision of shaping Central Asia, the South Caucasus and the Caspian region into a single geopolitical space.

According to the minister, Azerbaijan is also preparing to host the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) World Environment Day 2026. Climate resilience, biodiversity, Caspian Sea level changes, sustainable cities and renewable energy will be among the main topics of discussion during the event.

Parviz Shahbazov noted that promoting investment in the energy transition, expanding regional cooperation and strengthening Central Asia’s position in the global green energy agenda are among the forum’s key objectives. He also wished Türkiye success in its COP31 presidency.
