The European Union is gradually phasing out gas imports from Russia and does not plan to purchase even the smallest volumes of Russian energy in the future, said European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen during the meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

The Commissioner noted that when Russia launched its full-scale war against Ukraine, the EU imported approximately 45% of its gas from Russia, creating serious energy dependence.

According to him, this figure has now decreased to around 10%, but even this level is unacceptable, and the European Union aims to completely eliminate this dependence through a ban on Russian gas.

Dan Jørgensen emphasized that Russia has used energy as a tool of political pressure, and for this reason, the EU has declared energy security a priority.

He stated that under the current geopolitical circumstances, Azerbaijan is a reliable partner for the European Union, and Azerbaijani gas plays an important role in Europe’s energy security.

The Commissioner added that in the long term, the European Union aims to transition to a carbon-neutral economy that is not dependent on fossil fuels; however, in the short and medium term, gas demand will continue, and in this regard, cooperation with Azerbaijan is of particular importance.
