EU-backed Covenant of Mayors – Eastern Partnership holds awareness event in Nakhchivan

The EU-funded Covenant of Mayors – Eastern Partnership (CoM East) organized an awareness-raising event in Nakhchivan on the opportunities available for municipalities considering joining one of the largest local climate and energy initiatives, APA-Economics reports.

The main goal of the event was to clearly explain to potential stakeholders what membership in the Covenant of Mayors means in practice. The Covenant of Mayors – Eastern Partnership team presented information about the initiative and the specific support mechanisms available for cities. This support includes methodological tools for preparing Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans, tools for monitoring progress, a project support service, capacity-building activities, as well as technical assistance aimed at implementing climate projects.

Opening the event with a keynote speech, the EU Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Marijana Kujundzic, emphasized the role of cities in achieving tangible results in the fields of climate and energy and invited municipalities to join the initiative.

Jahid Mikayilov, Head of the Energy Efficiency Department of the Ministry of Energy, stressed that energy efficiency is one of the key priorities of Azerbaijan’s sustainable development agenda and that actions taken at the local level play an important role in turning this policy into real results.

Prior to Nakhchivan, the same awareness-raising events were held in the cities of Baku and Sheki.

The Covenant of Mayors – Eastern Partnership is part of the Global Covenant of Mayors family. This global initiative is the world’s largest alliance of cities for climate leadership and is built on the commitments of more than 13,500 cities and local authorities. These cities represent six continents and 147 countries, covering a total population of more than 1.2 billion people.
