Saudi Arabia and Syria are discussing the possibility of sending between 10,000 and 20,000 Syrian troops to Yemen to participate in military operations against the Houthis.
According to Axios, citing sources, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is seriously considering sending troops to Yemen, but a final decision has not yet been made.
Sources said Damascus and Riyadh have consulted Washington on the issue, and the US administration has indicated that it does not oppose such a move.
According to the publication, officials in the US administration believe that Ahmed al-Sharaa is highly likely to send troops to Yemen. Washington believes that deploying Syrian troops to Yemen could strengthen relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria.
However, Axios notes that the involvement of Syrian troops in the conflict in Yemen risks adding a religious dimension to the confrontation and further escalating it.
According to the publication, the contingent under consideration could include Sunni fighters. They would potentially fight against forces of the Shiite-affiliated Ansar Allah movement.
