Today, the main direction of the energy world is electrification. Together with additional green energy, gas, hydropower and other sources, it can create a very strong foundation for energy security, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Energy Orkhan Zeynalov said while speaking at the 31st Baku Energy Forum, APA-Economics reports.
According to him, work is being carried out together with partners and friends in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan on the Central Asia–Azerbaijan energy corridor. The project was launched in January this year, and we are looking to its future with great optimism. For the first time, two strategic regions, Azerbaijan and Central Asia, will be connected.
“We believe that in addition to this electricity cable, other opportunities will also emerge. The issue is not only about one gigawatt of capacity or what percentage of the cable will be utilized. The main issue is to have an alternative option, flexibility and diversification. Because dependence on only one source or one route always creates risks. If not today, it will certainly become a problem tomorrow,” the deputy minister emphasized.
Work is also underway on two new energy interconnection projects together with partners in Türkiye. One of them is the Azerbaijan–Türkiye interconnector. This project will connect mainland Azerbaijan with Türkiye through the Trans-Caucasus corridor. An agreement has already been reached on exporting 1 gigawatt of electricity through this line. However, depending on the results of commercial and technical assessments, this figure could be increased to 3 gigawatts. There is significant potential, especially in Türkiye’s western regions, and this potential could later be linked with Bulgaria and other European markets.
“The strategic Azerbaijan–Georgia–Türkiye–Bulgaria energy corridor project was also mentioned by Mr. President in his speech yesterday. An intergovernmental agreement is currently being prepared to ensure political support for the project and to establish a joint venture for its implementation,” the deputy minister concluded.
