BP plans to commission the 240-megawatt “Shafag” solar power plant being built in the Jabrayil district in 2027, said Ayla Azizova, BP’s Chief Financial Officer for Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye, during the 12th Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council and the 4th Ministerial Meeting of the Green Energy Advisory Council held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

According to her, the project is being implemented jointly with SOCAR Green, Hungary’s MVM company, and the Azerbaijan Business Development Fund. The solar power plant will serve the electrification of the Sangachal terminal and the decarbonization of operations.

“Within the framework of the project, the terminal is being connected to the power grid, and construction works are currently ongoing both within and outside the terminal area. The construction of the new substation has been largely completed, transmission line poles have been installed, and the facility is planned to begin receiving electricity in 2027,” Ayla Azizova noted.

According to her, within the framework of the construction of the solar power plant in Jabrayil, the supply of key equipment has been completed, and 360,000 photovoltaic modules, piles, and structural elements have been delivered to the site. Currently, approximately 20 percent of pile installation has been finalized; following this, the installation of tracking systems and modules will be completed. After mechanical completion, commissioning and testing works will be carried out to ensure the facility’s readiness for operation in 2027.

The company representative stated that the project will not only generate electricity but will also enable the formation of additional export volumes through a reduction in the use of gas as fuel.
