Road transportation plays a major role in the Middle Corridor and, in general, in the entire freight transportation system, Secretary General of the Azerbaijan International Road Carriers Association (ABADA) Kenan Gurbanov said during the Black Sea and Caspian Freight Forum 2026, APA-Economics reports.

“There is no multimodal transportation in which road transportation is not involved. Rail and road transportation are not competing sectors; on the contrary, as rail transportation develops, road transportation also develops in parallel,” Kenan Gurbanov noted.

He said that when the geopolitical situation changes and transportation along the Middle Corridor increases, road transport responds quickly to these changes thanks to its flexibility.

According to him, significant work has recently been carried out towards the digitalisation of the Middle Corridor.

“Without any exaggeration, I can say that Azerbaijan has played the main, locomotive role in this corridor [in terms of digitalisation – Ed.] and has acted as the leading country here,” the ABADA Secretary General noted.

He said that Azerbaijan already carries out electronic permit exchanges with Türkiye, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. At the same time, work is continuing with other countries on the transition to an electronic system.

Gurbanov also said that the first transportation using e-TIR has already been carried out. According to him, expanding electronic document circulation and converting key transportation documents into electronic format could provide a significant boost to reducing waiting times at borders and accelerating transportation along the Middle Corridor.

“The Middle Corridor is like a chain, and its strength depends on its weakest link. If Azerbaijan is ready for digitalisation, it should also encourage other countries to join this process,” Kenan Gurbanov added.
